    April '08: Frog Moon

Saturday, April 19, 2008, 09:13 PM [Full Moons]

Tonight as I sat out in a camp chair with a citronella candle, watching the full moon rising over the pines, I was serenaded by a lone frog that sang out his loud, long chirps from beneath the poolside gazebo. The cats were out walking in the night, running along the deck or laying on the concrete pathways, their collar bells jingling as the multitude of distant crickets chirped. I thought that I heard the local peacock crying out in the distance, but in time I came to realize that it was really the neighborhood kids from the subdivision next door.

While the moon was still behind the pines, I could see some stars. Leo was overhead, and I could tell that Saturn was still present. Something dim was moving high overhead, moving north from Leo into Ursa Major and beyond, and since it didn't blink like plane lights or fizzle out like a meteor, I figured it might be some satellite, the ISS, or maybe a Shuttle.

I sat and contemplated how the Earth turns counter-clockwise from North and how the Moon revolves counter-clockwise around it, and how we got our clockwise from how everything appeared to rise and fall from left to right as we Northern Hemisphereans faced south.
